2009 will be our Best Year Yet!
We toured Western Canada from Nov 13th to Nov 30, 2008. Thanks to all who came out to support us!!
Hanging With Judy Collins
We piggies were delighted to be able to meet the delightful Judy Collins.
Porkbellys Hit The Road in November
Porkbelly Futures are off to western Canada next week for a three week tour that will take them from Winnipeg to Nanaimo with all points in between, then back to Toronto. (see schedule)
Says Chas Elliott (bass) …
“We’re hoping to really add to our fan base on this tour. The summer festival did a lot to add to the number of “fatheads” on our team, but we think there’s more of them out there!
Mr. Reaney, We Owe You a Drink
London, Ontario is populated with lovely people. Some of these people seem to like Porkbelly Futures, because we keep getting asked back.
London Free Press music journalist James Reaney recently published his annual summer concert guide, saying “I am thrilled to think of Toronto’s Porkbelly Futures, the only band that can stand comparison with THE BAND, playing in Victoria Park. For free.”
This is a reference, of course, to London’s Home County Festival. We hope to see you there. And if we meet Mr. Reaney there we’ll… well, we’ll buy him a drink.
Canadian Songbook: Songs & Stories with Quarrington
The full title is actually Canadian Songbook: Songs & Stories w/ McLaughlin, Quarrington, Fearing, McClelland but it was just too long for the title so we cut it short. And moved up Paul’s name to bump Mclaughlin’s. And dropped the others.
This night is about sharing songs and stories in an intimate acoustic setting. CBC Radio 2 and True North Records present THE CANADIAN SONGBOOK, with Murray McLauchlan, Stephen Fearing, Catherine MacLellan, Paul Quarrington (Porkbelly Futures!) and Lynn Miles.
When and where? Two dates, two cities, just after Christmas.
Sat., Dec 27, 9 PM,
at the Music Hall in Toronto
Sun., Dec 28, 8 PM,
at Centrepointe Theatre in Ottawa
Quarrington’s New Book “The Ravine” Makes Giller Long List!
This just in! The Ravine has been longlisted for the 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Quarrington is no stranger to the Giller, having been shortlisted in 2004 for Galveston.
“The selections this year are especially formidable. Many of the other nominees are personal friends,” says Quarrington, “which might cause some difficulty when I begin the hexing incantations and whammies, but hey, I hope they understand. I’m proud to be on such a fine list.”
Is it any wonder that Quarrington won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour? In addition to pulling in the Leacock, his novel King Leary also kept him “on the island,” emerging as sole survivor (read: winner) of the 2008 CBC Canada Reads competition.
